Regular Cleaning

Regular Professional dental cleanings are usually performed by a Dentist or a Registered Dental Hygienist.  Your dental cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

  • Plaque Removal: Plaque is a sticky film that forms on the teeth.  It harbors a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva.  The bacteria within the plaque produce toxins cause inflammation of the gums, or gingivitis.  This inflammation can lead to periodontal disease if left untreated.
  • Tartar Removal:  Tartar, also known as calculus, is plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and has hardened and is now firmly attached to the tooth.  It forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments during a professional dental cleaning.
  • Teeth Polishing: Professional polishing, or prophylaxis, will remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during regular tooth brushing and scaling.
